INNOVATION AND ORGANIZATIONAL SUCCESS (A STUDY OF `PRIMA FOOD LIMITED , PORT HARCOURT)

CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

This chapter will discuss background to the study, statement of the problem, objective of the study, research question, justification of the study, research hypotheses, significant of the study, scope of the study, and definition of terms.

1.1  BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The rapid change  in the world economy and increased level of unemployment and inflation in Nigeria, many seek ways to keep surviving and to makes ends meet people continually seek ways to be very creative innovative in all they do and achieve them goals through diligence .

One of the ways of achieving goals is through innovation.

This especially to manufacturing organizations. Over the years, the concept of innovations as a mean to achieve success in the business operation has captured greater attentions. This is based on its impotence to individual or to the entire organization and society at large. The individual enjoys new ideas, new products and service and derives satisfaction. To the organization they experience growth, productivity, commitment and business continuity. However, certain factors have been noticed by researchers that tent to prevent success.  Greenberg and baron (2003), they stated that recent studies suggests that, some aspects of emotional intelligent good impression ideas generation and good interactions are closely related to success. Baron and Marksman (2000) posited that social competence which has to do with the ability to interact effectively with others also, closely related to success.

Closely examining the work of these authors in respect to the above studies, we could see that little regard was given to the innovation as factor that can ensure success.

Base on this gap in the lit erasures consulted, we desire to fill this gap by examining the relationship between innovation and success. We desire to discuss and explain how innovation will bring about success in `Prima Food Limited , Port Harcourt.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The problem of business failure and success in Nigeria has been given greater attention in the past years, The fact still remaining is, how can Nigeria business operators be improved in their operations in order to achieve more success? Before this question would be answers in this study, the recharger has observed several problems that manufacturing firms in Port Harcourt are facing. They include, lack of innovative ideas, lack of market awareness and too much money for pleasurable life style rather than business investment.

Some of these factors were observed by Uricto (20011) when he stated that,  some possible causes of business failure include; lack of management know how, lack of technical competencies, one person lack of clear focus” etc.

Since they have been noticed by the researcher, our point of departure here is to critically investigate into selected manufacturing firms in Port Harcourt. Thus, how can innovation improve organizational success?

1.3  PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The main purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between innovation and organizational success of `prima foods , Port Harcourt

  The specific objectives of the study include;

  1. To examine the relationship between technological innovation and organizational success in `prima foods , Port Harcourt.
  2. To examine the relationship between product innovation and organizational success in `prima foods port Harcourt.
  3. To examine the relationship between service innovation and organizational success in `prima foods , Port Harcourt.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following research questions guided the study.

  1. To what extend does technological innovation relate to organizational growth?
  2. In what ways does service innovation relate to organizational continuity?
  3. What influence does service innovation have on organizational continuity?
  4. To what degree does product innovation relate to organizational growth?

1.5  RESEARCH HYPOTHESES

The following hypotheses will be tested in the study

HO1: There is no significant relationship between technological innovation and Organizational growth in `prima foods , Port Harcourt.

HO2: There is no significant relationship between technological innovation and organizational continuity prima foods , Port Harcourt.

HO3: There is no significant relationship between product innovation and organizational growth `prima ,, Port Harcourt.

Ho4: There is no significant relationship between product innovation and organizational continuity `prima , Port Harcourt.

Ho5: There is no significant relationship between service innovation and  organizational  Growth in prima , Port Harcourt.

Ho6: There is no significant relationship between service innovation and organizational continuity in `prima , Port Harcourt

1.6  JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY

The justification of any problem is to provide useful recommendation with which the problem state will overcome or resolve. A study like this will serve as a source of document to other student who may need to go into study of this area, and will be greatly advantages to practical managers, entrepreneurs, and all those who want to engage in entrepreneurial activities.

1.7 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

 Since the purpose of the study is examine innovation and organization success in `prima foods , Port Harcourt, the findings from this study will be to a great extend valued by the selected manufacturing firms in Port Harcourt. The impotence of study to students in field of management will

not be understated, as it will serve as a referencing point for further research work on innovation or success of an organization or individual.

With these benefits in mind, the research has determined to carry out effective comprehensive research process for the manufacturing firm as well as society at large will benefit immensely from the findings of this work.

1.8 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The content scope of the study focuses on related literature on innovation and organizational success. Major information would be sourced from literatures and means data source the researcher believed that these sources of information will really enhance the meaningfulness of the findings of the research work. The study is limited to `prima foods , in Port Harcourt, Rivers state Nigeria.

1.9 DEFINITION OF TERMS

Innovation: This has to do with taking creative ideas and turning them into useful products or methods technological of human capital development profitable and success of the organization.

Organizational growth: This relates to changes that take place in the organization in the form of increase in size of organization improved.

Organizational continuity:  The ability of an organization to adapt to any changes or threats that may occur and continue to be in business operations.

Product innovation: The development and the market introduction on a new, redesigned or substantially improved good or service.

Organizational success: This could be looked at as the extent to which an organization realizes its potential by incorporating all its necessary strategies to achieve its set goals.

Technological innovation: This is process through which new

 (Or improved) technologies are developed.
